Extension Services
At SPRODETA Agribusiness Limited, agricultural extension is a core service supporting smallholder farmers in Mzimba and Rumphi districts. Farmers are the backbone of Malawi’s food system, and their success relies on access to accurate information, practical guidance, and technical support. Our extension services reach farmers across villages, farm fields, cooperative centres, and hard-to-reach mountainous areas, ensuring every producer has the knowledge needed to improve productivity and operate commercially.
Our model is hands-on and field-oriented, led by trained field officers who work directly with farmer clubs and cooperatives. Officers provide practical demonstrations on land preparation, soil health, planting density, pest and disease management, and livestock husbandry. By focusing on real-world applications, farmers see methods in practice, understand their rationale, and can replicate them on their own farms.
We use multiple approaches to make extension services inclusive and effective. Field demonstrations remain central, allowing farmers to observe improved techniques across our priority value chains, maize, rice, soybeans, beans, groundnuts, poultry, and goats—and compare them with existing practices. Cooperative-based group training fosters structured learning, peer discussion, and knowledge sharing, reinforcing learning within community structures.
Individual farm visits provide personalised support tailored to each farmer’s conditions. Officers assess crop progress, livestock health, farm records, and help address challenges such as pest outbreaks, feed shortages, or soil fertility issues. Continuous mentorship ensures farmers receive support throughout the season, from land preparation to harvesting and post-harvest handling, rather than being left on their own after training.
Climate-smart agriculture is a pillar of our program. To enhance resilience against climate change, farmers are trained in soil and water conservation, use of drought-tolerant varieties, crop diversification, integrated pest management, manure application, and sustainable livestock feeding. These practices help maintain productivity during unpredictable rainfall, dry spells, or pest outbreaks, supporting food security and environmental sustainability.
We emphasise improved seeds and modern agronomic technologies. Farmers are guided on selecting high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties; proper spacing and planting depth, fertilizer application, and crop rotation to enhance soil health and productivity. Livestock farmers receive training on nutrition, breeding, shelter management, disease prevention, and handling to raise poultry and goats efficiently. Feed formulation advice reduces costs and improves weight gain, ultimately increasing income.
SPRODETA’s extension program is integrated with broader agribusiness interventions. Extension complements our input loan program, business management training, and off-taker market system. Farmers accessing input loans receive guidance on proper use, while those in business training translate enterprise plans into practical production decisions. Extension officers also help farmers meet market quality standards for aggregation and supply to the Agribusiness Centre in Enc’ongoleni. This integrated approach supports farmers throughout the value chain, from planning and production to marketing and income generation.
Through this interconnected extension ecosystem, SPRODETA strengthens productivity, enhances producer knowledge, and builds resilient food systems across Northern Malawi. Farmers accessing our services consistently demonstrate higher yields, improved product quality, better farm management skills, and greater market participation. Importantly, they become part of a growing movement of commercially oriented smallholder farmers driving rural economic development.
