Agricultural Input Loans (Soft Loans)

At SPRODETA Agribusiness Limited, we understand that smallholder farmers cannot increase productivity or transition to commercial agriculture without access to timely and affordable inputs. Many farmers in Mzimba and Rumphi districts are excluded from formal lending due to lack of collateral, inconsistent incomes, and rigid banking requirements. To address these barriers, SPRODETA provides farmer-friendly agricultural input loans, designed not just as financing, but as strategic investments in production, livelihoods, and rural economic transformation.

Our loans cover a wide range of essentials across priority value chains, including improved seed varieties for maize, rice, beans, soybeans, and groundnuts; fertilisers; pesticides; livestock such as goats and day-old chicks; feed and supplements; veterinary supplies; and basic equipment. By integrating production, aggregation, processing, and marketing, SPRODETA ensures that inputs meet both farm productivity and market-quality standards. Inputs are tailored to the farming calendar and the needs of each value chain, reducing crop failure and enhancing yields.

A key strength of our program is its flexible, context-appropriate repayment model. Unlike commercial banks, SPRODETA aligns repayments with harvest cycles, so farmers repay only after generating income. Repayment is often facilitated through commodity sales to SPRODETA, which acts as a guaranteed off-taker. This arrangement reduces financial stress, assures a market for produce, and strengthens SPRODETA’s supply chain with consistent volumes for processing and distribution.

The program also strengthens farmer organisation. Through over 160 farmer clubs and six registered cooperatives, collective planning, group-based loan administration, peer support, and accountability are promoted. Cooperatives play a key role in aggregation, quality control, and loan monitoring, ensuring transparency and minimising defaults. This cooperative-centred model allows SPRODETA to reach remote, hilly areas underserved by financial and agricultural institutions.

To date, 2,892 farmers have accessed improved inputs through this soft-loan system, resulting in higher production across multiple value chains. Farmers can now invest confidently in certified seeds, quality feed, and fertilisers, leading to better crop performance, stronger livestock health, increased yields, and greater volumes supplied to SPRODETA’s aggregation system. The program helps smallholders move from subsistence to commercially oriented farming, boosting household incomes, community resilience, and regional food security.

The program is enhanced by integration with SPRODETA’s extension services and business management training. Farmers receive continuous technical guidance on land preparation, crop spacing, fertiliser application, pest management, livestock feeding, climate-smart practices, and post-harvest handling. Combining finance with technical support ensures inputs are used effectively, maximising yield potential and minimising losses. This integration also strengthens loan performance while building farmer knowledge, confidence, and long-term production capacity.

Input loans are also linked to SPRODETA’s structured off-taker system, connecting farmers to reliable markets with fair prices, timely collection, and consistent demand. This reduces dependence on exploitative middlemen and shields farmers from price volatility. In turn, SPRODETA secures raw materials for processing and distribution through its Agribusiness Centre in Enc’ongoleni, supporting maize flour milling and other processed product lines.
